Milliman suffered a tragic loss on October 12, 2014 when Bradley M. Smith, chairman of the board and long-time Milliman consultant and principal, collapsed and died while playing tennis. He was 59.
Brad possessed a unique combination of technical brilliance and strategic vision that served him well as chairman of the world’s largest independent actuarial consulting firm. During his tenure as chairman, firm revenues tripled and its employee count doubled, and Milliman grew from a largely U.S.-based company to a firm with offices in all major global markets.
Brad was an active participant in the leadership of the actuarial profession. He served terms as president of the Society of Actuaries and vice chairman of The Actuarial Foundation. Before joining Milliman in 1986, Brad was vice president and chief actuary at J.C. Penney Life Insurance Company.
Brad had already announced his planned retirement after 14 years as chairman and 28 years total at Milliman, so the process of selecting a new Milliman chairperson was already underway.
Brad is survived by his wife Karen, his daughter Emily, his son-in-law Ky, and countless friends and professional admirers. All of Milliman shares in the grief over Brad’s passing.
